Steve Backus first started selling real estate in 1983 at Peters Real Estate in Eastham Ma learning under Collis Peters who had spent years as a broker in
the Eastham,Wellfleet,Orleans area. I really enjoyed working for Collis,
he had a wealth of knowledge, a kind heart and a great sense of humor. He
used to be so proud of his appraisal reports, my favorite memory was back
in 1985. Collis had just finished a 30 plus page appraisal report and it
was on his desk ready to be stapled together. He looked at it as proud as
a new father having just heard the news “its a boy”. I set him up by
walking by him with a coke can, taking a big sip right in front of him as
i congratulated him on such a fine looking report. When he went to the
bathroom, i sneaked into his office with a coke can with one of those fake
coke spills coming out of it (i bought it at a novelty store)…I put it
right on top of the report….it really looked like I had ruined it. I
went back to my office and tears of laughter came out of me as i heard him
scream and holler my name before he picked up the coke and realized it was
a gag. My other memorable moment was my first day when he sat me down and
told me he wished that just by talking to me he could pass on his wealth
of knowledge and I wouldn’t make any mistakes….but he said that was not
possible and I was going to have go out there and make my own mistakes and
learn from them. He was right, there is a lot more to this business than
showing houses and signing up listings.
I have spent the past 24 years in the real estate industry. I have
the SRA designation from the Appraisal Institute, am a licensed real
estate salesperson in the state of Massachusetts, and am a Certified
General Real Estate in the state of Massachusetts. My experience,
